The KEE Ra ShA Horses

Blue-Horses-v3Many years ago, I had a dream about a horse, it was such a vivid dream that I still think about it. It had a strange feeling to it, which I cannot describe but was powerful. In the dream, the blue horse talked to me for a long while and what he said was very wise and beautiful. He walked away from me and,
as he left, he turned a pinky violet colour whilst his mane and tail became gold.

This is another painting of which I have made several versions, because I have enjoyed the game of painting it differently. I always like to paint trees with different leaves – something I have done since I was a child: just as I have drawn horses, dogs and birds quite obsessively, although the meanings of their different form and colour are nothing that I can explain – although the meaning is there.

The Red Horses

The Red version of the above Painting. Red horses seem to appear quite often in my work and I have no real idea why, save that I like the look of them and I have known and loved two chestnut horses who were nearly a red colour.

Voyage in the Night

New Earth: one

v3 garden one.lores

This painting is also about lucid dreaming, about travelling by moving, painting, meditation, to  places unknown to the everyday consciousness. In this vision state we can go where we will and visit the places of which we can only dream. This is a landscape, which arrived in small sections as I painted it, hence the many divisions and juxtapositions. Some places, beings and plants are very small and some are very large, they are arrived at by intention. An interesting meditative process of producing a painting, each section of which is a picture of itself.

Scriven – First and Last Requests

_scriven--First-and-last-requests

A scrivener was a Middle English word meaning someone who could read and write and would sell that facility to others.
I like the sound of the word  – and the word scribble must be related, there’s a feeling of engraving somehow locked up in the word for me, although I doubt that is actually the case.

I made this entirely abstract drawing, which is very small, on some card which had already had some print and some scribble on it. I painted thousands of tiny dots with a very small brush and enjoyed making this one very much indeed.
Some of the colour is pure pigment sprinkled down on to the paper.

I wrote a lot of words on it. They are only to be read by those who really are curious to know, so are very unclear until the way to decipher them is arrived at.

Sometimes I just feel very happy to be able to do such things.

 Freedom

freedom

To me, a flight of birds wheeling in the sky is the epitome of freedom.

These birds are pretty well the same as the ones from ” Asleep in Tuscany”and the farmhouse is the same.

It was made as an illustration of the word “freedom” for a website.

Max: Barking at the Birds

Max-barking-at-the-birds

(black & white)

I have had two imaginary dogs as well as a great number of live ones, sadly almost all deceased, I draw most of them doing things. This one, Max, is a sort of lurcher/doberman and he has a pointy nose and likes to bark at birds.

The birds don’t care.

They fly around looking for a perch. His barking is of no importance to them.

Three Dogs and a Butterfly

3-dogs-and-one-butterfly

Three dogs, which are dog shapes referenced from pre-historic wall paintings, stand on an background divided up into hundreds of areas of colour, which took me hours to paint and which I rather enjoyed.

The butterfly is deliberately hard to spot. maybe the dogs are waiting for it to move, so they can chase it.

On the original watercolour painting, the collars are silver metallic paint, so I paint the prints with the same paint.

The Bull Dance

A long while back,  I had a series of illustrations to do for TV about Crete and the Minotaur legend. There were 12 of them and quite large, all watercolour painted before the digital age. I did a lot of research and it took me quite a long time.
Many years later, I still had the images in my mind.
I had found the bull leaping phenomenon quite interesting and was astonished to discover that people still did it.
Bulls are magnificent creatures, some of whom I know to be sweet and gentle pets.
I painted this mostly in the middle of the night during months of insomnia, I left the painting set up and went and continued on with it every time I woke up in the middle of the light summer nights. I t was a sort of distillation of the feelings brought about by the illustrations so many years ago which were still  in my mind, so its a decorative painting about ancient times.

In the Vale of Pewsey

Here is a painting based on the Vale of Pewsey with the white horse on the hillside, its not in any way literal but expresses how I felt about standing there in the Autumn.
I enjoyed the journey of making this with the subtle colours and textures in the seed pods of the Honesty plant.

I often feel that within small passages in a painting, there are other small paintings to be found.
This is certainly the case with this painting, where each plant is a small painting on its own. (edit)

Asleep in Tuscany

Asleep-in-Tuscany-redrawnonmarch-2013-600dpi

This painting was the original painting on which the series of “Watching the Oranges” was based. It was made in a triptych format, like an altarpiece with the main picture having an abstract panel down either side in colours that I liked with my favourite turquoise  centre piece. It had a hand on it behind some birds
as if the birds had come from the “hand of god” – that was the basic idea – representing a dream I had, whilst sleeping in a farm house in Tuscany, which is shown at the bottom left. At the top right is a castle and some mountains, from the same trip. Birds for me always represent Freedom.

  1. Watching the Oranges: One

This is the most recent version of a painting which has gone through numerous incarnations of colour and detail, all of which have been sold. I have enjoyed playing with altering this image so many times without tiring of it. Its basically an abstract in three vertical sections.

I have a base piece of artwork which I painted in watercolour, without any detail and scanned into the computer. I print this out, in extremely pale colours, as a guide and then paint all the new subject matter and detail into it. The number of birds and how they are shown changes all the time, the first painting only had three birds. In the later ones there are around thirty. The flowering trees and the landscape change, depending on the narrative which forms in my head as I work on it. This painting is always a story. Some paintings are not really about anything specific, more about texture and colour. This one centres around the 2 wolfhounds who sit either side of the orange tree. I think the idea comes from the medieval door guardians on churches, one either side.
Anyway, the dogs are watching the tree and are guardians of the picture’s events.
Painting is play, making up stories and drawing them out is always there for children. Most artists are fortunate enough to retain the ability to play in that way However, I suppose being an illustrator for so long means that I am rather attuned to making a picture which tells a story of one kind or another, even if it is to sell coffee.

I just draw new things into it on top of the pale abstract background as it forms them in my mind, it seems to create its own images. Here it is a narrative picture about an orange tree, guarded by two of my wolfhounds, Cai and Thor. A flock of birds fly in and stream across the sky, the oranges on the tree begin to sing and a path opens up to the shoreline, where there may be a boat. You can go wherever you choose, its a portal to imagining a journey to wherever is appealing.

Cretan Horses and Copper Trees

grekk-horses-copper-tree

This painting is based on several different interests and experiences.

I have been to Crete three times, none of those occasions was the sort of beach holiday for which many people visit the island. Each time, I have avoided the commercially ruined coast full of hotels and spent the time travelling in the interior, walking and having the occasional swim in an unspoilt area. I love the landscape there, the valleys and the hills, the wild flowers and trees.

I have to admit that,as far as I remember, the “horses” that I saw there, were, in fact donkeys… so I am making up the fact that I saw                         horses in Crete, because I don’t think I did  🙂

I have been drawn to go there because I have always felt that I had an association with its past history in Minoan times. The famous Minoan civilization existed around 2000 and 1600 BC, the civilization declined and disappeared for which there is no real known reason, they left behind some very beautiful artifacts which have long held a fascination for me.

I was asked to illustrate a story about the Minotaur for a children’s television programme and I spent several weeks researching and drawing for the set of pictures, the research gave me an even greater interest in the island and feeling for an historical connection.

 The Yellow Horse

Virtue3copyrightsueclimpsonwebnew-yellow-horse

The Yellow Horse is a painting with a lot of ideas and references all piled into one area. I had seen a photograph of a horse, which I liked, I was having a moment of being very keen on Odilon Redon, who had painted the yellow head of a man, which made me feel that I wished to paint this horse in yellow. This felt like something that I wanted to do rather a lot.

I started twice – I began to make a big painting and then I decided it would never get finished because the surface area alone demanded too much time and work… so I began again, smaller, but I kept and photographed the first one and stored it in the computer. Then I continued with the smaller version, which was for a present for a friend who had a horse – and this particular horse was one with whom I felt a strong connection. This painting was really about the essence of the horse – as she is, rather obviously, not yellow herself.

Also in this painting there are camellias, which was a reference to the book, “La Dame aux Camelias”  –  there was something about the whole idea that made me think of the book. Although the subject makes for a strange connection… maybe it’s referencing my own longing to have a horse, which never entirely came to pass.

Anyway, I photographed the painting before it went to my friend and this is an amalgam of the two, the large and small combined. One day, I will probably re-paint it  in some other way,  with new details and a new “story”.

 Maybe minus the gargantuan camellias.

Cats Whiskers

the-cats-whiskers

I inherited a set of scaperboards from the fifties which had belonged to my father. He may or may not have made an entire picture but he had made some really lovely marks as experiments on one of the boards and that made me want to play with the boards. I made four pictures, each one more complicated than the previous. Then I got some problems with my wrist from the tight grip on the tools and the tiny marks. So I stopped. It was a compulsive episode. Maybe the same thing happened to my father and so he gave up and left them for me. I used lino cutting tools, which were also his. Maybe there are distinct tools for scraper board. I don’t know. I am sure they still sell them, however, I guess painting a board with indian ink and carving it would have the same effect.

I loved making the curving lines and the leaf patterns and then I discovered that there was a cat waiting in the bushes.

Anyway, I scanned in the results to my computer and I added some colour via the computer so I now sell it as a print.

Red Jiggly Squares

jiggly-small-red

This is the third of a series of paintings made up of small paintings that I have made over ten years or so.
I began with making small pictures inside squares and then developed the idea into other shapes, rectanglular and irregualar .

Sometimes I make a tiny painting for inclusion in one of these   …and then turn it into a larger painting:  it looks rather nice enlarged, as the texture becomes more available to work into – and I love fiddling around with texture.

I love the feel of a pencil on paper, of paint on a brush, the sight of a piece of
inviting, white stretched paper or a canvas.

Actually, the anticipation is usually followed by a small pang of regret at the moment the first mark is made, it’s no longer pristine and inviting, I have begun…
and I have to continue, self doubt raises its unwelcome head.

Focus on confidence, all will be well, I will be reasonably happy with the outcome.

I am only very happy with the outcome after a long while and I have rather forgotten the picture

….so, its either a nice surprise and I do like it…     or not.
